Oyo Confirms 23 Cholera Cases, One Death

The Oyo State Government announced on Tuesday that 245 suspected cases of cholera were reported between January 1 and October 7, 2024, with 23 cases confirmed and one death recorded during this period.

This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Health, Oluwasherimi Ajetumobi, during a press briefing at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan following the weekly Executive Council Meeting.

Ajetumobi noted that the single death involved a patient brought in from Lagos. She added that nine patients currently admitted to the Infectious Disease Center in Ibadan are responding to treatment and are expected to be discharged soon.

She further explained that the state government discussed a request for N210.243 million as its counterpart contribution to support a malaria net campaign scheduled for May 2025.

The funds will cover micro-planning activities such as logistics, the campaign’s launch, and distribution of over 5.67 million nets procured by USAID, aimed at protecting vulnerable groups like children under five, pregnant women, and the elderly from malaria.

The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatunbosun, outlined cultural events approved by the Executive Council for the remainder of the year. These include the World Twin Festival on October 12, 2024, the Yemoja Festival from October 10-27, and several others culminating in the Ogbomoso Global Cultural Carnival from December 14-24, 2024.
