The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp commenced yesterday nationwide, but Polytechnic graduates with Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) lacking Industrial Training (IT) certification were turned away.
The NYSC has introduced a new policy requiring IT certification for those seeking to fulfill their national service obligations, halting the screening process for some HND graduates. Previously, the NYSC announced that HND graduates must provide evidence of completing their one-year mandatory IT certificate before registration in their respective camps.
This policy mandates that polytechnic and monotechnic graduates provide proof of the mandatory one-year Industrial Training as a requirement for participating in the camp.
At the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja, registration proceeded smoothly for corps members with the necessary documents. However, some corps members were rejected due to the absence of an IT certificate, expressing frustration at being excluded despite completing their degrees and being ready to serve. They hope for a resolution allowing them to fulfill their service obligations without penalty.
A corps member, who wished to remain anonymous, described the process as poorly timed, as their peers were already serving without facing this hurdle. He said “They are asking for the IT certificate; once you present it and other documents, they ask you to proceed with registration. The requirement has led to frustration among some corps members.”
A nursing mother, Mrs. Hauwa Collins, found the process transparent, provided all necessary documents were presented. “I arrived at the camp before 10 a.m. When screening started, I was asked to present my IT certificate, age declaration, and other documents. They did not waste time after verifying all records.”
The fate of affected corps members remains uncertain, with tight security checks preventing non-corps members from entering the camp.
