Lagos records 50 convictions against sexual offenders in one year — Sanwo-Olu

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide-Sanwo-Olu announced that over 50 individuals have been convicted of sexual and gender-based violence in Lagos State within the last year. This statement was shared via a video posted by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, on Sunday.

The governor highlighted this achievement as part of the state’s efforts to combat domestic and sexual violence, including support for 6,000 survivors and outreach to over a million residents through advocacy. This announcement coincided with the launch of the state’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of dedicating a full month to raising awareness about these issues, ensuring they remain a top priority. He highlighted his administration’s comprehensive approach, implemented through the THEMES Plus Agenda, which includes preventive and remedial policies, strategic interventions, and programs to support and empower survivors.

Despite progress, the governor acknowledged that many survivors remain hidden and urged Lagos residents to join the fight against sexual and gender-based violence. He reiterated the state’s achievements, including over 50 convictions, support for 6,000 survivors, and outreach to over a million residents.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that many survivors still lack access to services due to the secretive nature of these issues. He called for collective action to raise awareness, support survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to driving systemic change, backed by strong political will and legal support, and urged residents to join the movement for a safer and more just society.
