The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has taken decisive steps to escalate its confrontation with the Federal Government, accusing the Tinubu-led administration of being unwilling to address outstanding issues with the union adequately. This resolution emerged from an Emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting convened on Saturday, June 8th, 2024, at the University of Abuja.
During the emergency gathering, ASUU’s leadership observed that the government has failed to decisively address all unresolved matters, including the renegotiation of the FGN-ASUU 2009 Agreement, which outlines conditions of service for university lecturers. The long-standing dispute over the implementation of this agreement has been a recurring point of contention, leading to previous industrial actions and disruptions in the academic calendar.
In response to the perceived inaction of the government, ASUU’s NEC resolved to intensify its campaign and explore potential strike actions. The union plans to escalate media and public engagements to sensitize the public on the government’s failure to address the outstanding issues.
Furthermore, within the next four weeks, ASUU will set machinery in motion to further mobilize its members. At the end of this mobilization period, the union will request a referendum from its branches, presenting options for possible action(s).
ASUU’s NEC also resolved to convene a NEC-for-NEC meeting after the conduct of the referendum to decide on the next line of action.
