Adeleke Advocates for Subnational Governments in Fighting Climate Change

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has emphasized the crucial role of subnational governments in combating climate change. He made this statement while hosting a delegation from the Green Growth Africa Sustainability Network, highlighting the varying levels of response and action among state governments in Nigeria.

Adeleke advocated for a more nuanced approach to assessing state governments’ efforts, considering their unique circumstances and engaging in direct interactions between reviewers and state desk officers. He stressed the importance of subnational governments in addressing climate change, as it is a local issue requiring local solutions.

The governor showcased his administration’s achievements in the climate change sector, describing his government as a “green government” with a robust agenda. He highlighted initiatives such as policy development, investment portfolios for climate projects, and the creation of a carbon finance template.

Adeleke also announced his chairmanship of the Osun State Climate Change Action Council, which will serve as a policy and clearing board for climate-related matters. He expressed commitment to international requSubnationalests for strong political leadership on climate change.

State consultant on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Prof Chinwe Obuaku, criticized a recent rating of Osun’s climate change efforts, citing methodological flaws and lack of engagement with the state. She emphasized the need for a more inclusive and context-sensitive approach to assessment.

The Executive Secretary of Green Growth Africa Sustainability Network, Dr Adedoyin Adeleke, commended the governor’s commitment to climate change and expressed interest in a long-term partnership with the Osun State government to implement innovative climate projects.
